 "OMG!! Incredible!! 1,000 Stars!!" 2010-04-07
By karen b (washington, dc USA)
Some years ago, I had neck and back surgery. If I lift anything too heavy, I'm in big trouble ... pain-wise.
THIS pillow is UNREAL!! I just got it today, and couldn't wait to try it out.
Talk about COMFORTABLE!!
This pillow is SOLID, FIRM, and gives you the appropriate neck support to keep your vertebrae aligned.
Some reviewers complained that the pillow was too hard. NOT for me!!
Mine isn't hard enough! I'm gonna order some more buckwheat.
I'm gonna sleep like a baby.
RELIEF AT LAST!!
1,000 stars for this buckwheat pillow!!
Love it!!

 "What a relief!" 2010-03-16

I wish I had found this pillow four or five pillows ago!! I bought this hoping for the best but not counting on it as I have tried SO many different pillows, including expensive models from the Relax the Back store. This pillow is amazing!!

The reviews said that it might take a couple of nights to get used to it; some said that there was a slight odor. It took me ONE night to know that I loved it, and I noticed no offensive odor at all. It is smaller than I expected...but that was okay as the first day I got it I was on my way out on a ten-day trip. I took the pillow and put it in my suitcase and so the smaller size was actually a plus. It is large enough for daily use.

It was a bit too "full" and didn't have give where I needed it, so I took out about a quart of the beans and then it was just perfect, allowing me to form a little depression in the right spot but still providing the needed support. Some of the other pillows offered don't have a zipper, so you can't adjust the fullness like you can with this one; that's a huge plus.

Note that it doesn't come with a pillowcase, so if you don't want to use a regular case and end up folding the excess over (it occupies about half of a reg/queen size case), then you should order one with it.

I truly cannot say enough good things about this pillow, and this is the FIRST time I've written a review for an Amazon product, though I purchase here regularly. I thought if I could help encourage someone who's in pain to try something that would help, I wanted to do it. For the first time in years, literally, I wake up without neck pain. I hope you'll find the relief that I did!

 "Works for me" 2010-03-05

I have been interested in trying a pillow like this for a long time, but never could find any kind of buckwheat hull pillow where I live to even get a rough idea of what they are like. Finally took the plunge and bought this one so I'll be trying to provide a review useful to other newbies.

Got the Japanese size and am glad I did. True, you can't just roll over and expect to stay on this smaller pillow, but I have no problem adjusting the position. But maybe it would bother some. Filled, it is about 19x12. I have no problem with this.

The pillow is "noisy" when you move around (and I move around a LOT), but it doesn't bother me at all. It isn't like it is really loud, but it sure isn't going to be like a foam or feather pillow and that should be obvious. Again, you never know what will bother some people. I don't really notice it now.

Finally, yep, it is "hard". But this is partly because the pillow is overstuffed - that's a good thing! First couple nights I used it as is. It was VERY firm - very little extra space for the hulls to move around. You wouldn't want to flop your head onto one of these things that is stuffed like that! It isn't going to "give" like a soft pillow.

While it was "hard", a key thing I noticed was that the weight of my head seemed spread out over a broader area and that did make me more comfortable, as did the better support for my neck.

Then I decided to try removing some hulls. Like I said, they are overstuffed. You take some out and maybe a year or so later when natural polishing results in them taking up less space, you put some of the "extras" back in!

In my case, I took out enough to mostly fill a 1 quart ziplock bag. The extra space does make it a bit "softer", though it is still relatively hard. After a bit longer, I took enough out to almost fill another bag. Definitely lets things shift around better but, for me, I found I preferred it a bit stiffer so I put back about half of the 2nd ziplock bag I had filled. Part of my preference for this may be because of a particular problem I sometimes experience with my head (won't detail it here, but stiffer seemed better for me to get the exact position I needed).

I have noticed a difference in my sleep which is either a heck of a coincidence or a great benefit of this pillow.

I'm 61 and almost all my life I've tended to take forever to get to sleep. Pretty much always more than an hour and sometimes several. If I woke up, I often stayed awake for hours more. Now that I'm older, I tended to wake up a LOT - 3 to 6 times a night.

Since using this pillow, I get to sleep usually in under an hour (even under 30 minutes). I still wake up, but usually only once or twice a night and one of those is to use the bathroom anyway so no connection to the pillow and usually I fall back to sleep reasonably quick.

So, it works for me.

One other thing. I have LOTS of different pillows from my attempt to find something that helped. Not sure why it is, but all of the other ones kept having the pillow case slide part way off as I slept. When I got this pillow, I also got the pillow case they sell. Seems to stay in place particularly well. Whether it is the material or size or something else, I have no idea.

 "Wonderful" 2010-03-04
By RYAN OTOOLE (Plano, TX United States)
Pillow is very high quality inside and out. Made of great materials. Personally, the pillow was too full for me so I removed about 8 cups of the filling and stored it in a sealed plastic bag. After that it was perfect.

The filling is loud so light sleepers may not like that part much. I sleep like a rock so it doesn't bother me a bit. My wife said she ears it rustle whenever I move around though but it doesn't bother her enough to keep her awake at night. It kinda sounds like you're tossing around a big sack of pretzels or something.

This type of pillow is much different than anything I've ever used in the past. It will shape and form as you desire but once you settle in it's pretty solid. This is what I was looking forward to the most. For those expecting a sweet fluffy experience, you may be disappointed at first but I'm finding that the more I use it, the more I love it. I feel better when I wake up in the morning; my neck isn't stiff and my body doesn't ache as much.
If you're tired of all your pillows going flat and sick of spending so much time bunching and folding pillows to fit that perfect shape then I think you'll be very satisfied with this pillow.

One last warning is about the size. The measurements are clearly marked but didn't register at all for some reason. This is not a standard pillow size by any means. I was able to fit it into a standard pillowcase sideways and double-over the slack. It's really about a third of a twin/queen size pillow but considering I don't have to bunch and fold it at all, I got over that almost immediately. It's big enough for my head with room to spare on either side and I can comfortably sleep on my side or "arm sleeper" position without any trouble.
